Cabinet Placement and Spacing Rules

A cabinet that extends past the bench front creates a persistent forward-lean posture during detail work — uncomfortable within an hour of continuous use and a long-term fatigue issue. If pegboard will go between the bench surface and the upper cabinet base, account for that full panel height before marking the cabinet position on the wall.
On walls shared with a vehicle bay, confirm that cabinet doors clear a fully-opened car door before anchoring anything — this typically requires 36 inches between the bench front and the opposite wall. Anchor wall cabinets into studs with lag screws; never into drywall alone. A ledger board screwed into studs at the cabinet base height simplifies installation and keeps multiple cabinet units level during mounting.
Locking Cabinets: When They Make Sense
Locking cabinets are worth the cost in two specific situations: households with children where shop chemicals, solvents, or sharp tools need secured access, and shared or rental workshop spaces where tool loss is a real risk. For a single-household private shop, locks are optional.
Most pre-built steel shop cabinets include keyed locks. For DIY wood cabinet builds, a cam lock kit retrofits to overlay or inset doors without replacing existing hinges. Running a single key across all locked cabinets in the shop keeps day-to-day access practical. For finishing chemicals and solvents specifically, a dedicated locked cabinet separate from general tool storage is the cleaner long-term solution.
