A distributed load spreads weight across the full surface — tools, materials, and equipment sitting flat on the top. A point load concentrates force on a small area — a vise jaw clamping down, a heavy item dropped onto a corner, or a machine mounted on four small bolt points. The practical rule: if any single load contacts the surface through a footprint smaller than one square foot, treat it as a point load and apply a more conservative limit than the rated distributed total.
Upgrade when your working load consistently exceeds 75% of the surface's rated capacity, when you add a mounted vise or benchtop tool with significant clamping force, or when surface deformation is visible. MDF and particleboard tops degrade faster under repeated loading than solid wood or steel — earlier replacement is often more practical than waiting for visible damage.
