Shops running a table saw, jointer, or planer regularly benefit from stepping up to a small cyclone separator, which extends filter life by removing chips before they reach the final filtration stage. A shop vac with a cyclone pre-separator remains a capable option for portable power tools that don't need ducted collection.
System Formats
Three formats cover most small home shop dust collection needs. A single-stage collector pulls chips and dust directly through the impeller into a filter bag — simple, compact, and the most common entry point for a home shop with one or two stationary tools. A cyclone separator adds a conical pre-separation stage ahead of the collector, spinning out roughly 90% of chips into a bin before the remaining fine dust reaches the filter — extending filter life significantly under heavy use. A shop vac with a cyclone lid attachment handles portable power tools well, at a lower cost and footprint than a dedicated dust collector.
CFM Sizing
Most portable stationary tools in a home shop — table saws, band saws, jointers — need 350 to 400 CFM at the tool to collect effectively. Airflow drops as it travels through ducting, especially through flexible hose with its ribbed interior, so a collector rated at 500-600 CFM at the intake leaves enough margin to still deliver 350+ CFM at the tool after those losses.
Running two tools from the same collector at once splits that airflow between them, which is why most single-collector home shop setups use a single 4-inch blast gate system — opening the gate to the active tool and closing the others keeps full airflow directed where it's needed.
Ducting Basics
Flexible hose works for short runs and single-tool setups where the collector moves with the tool, but its ribbed interior creates more airflow resistance than rigid duct. For a fixed system feeding more than one tool, rigid PVC or metal duct for the main run — with flex hose reserved for the final short connection to each tool — preserves more CFM at the point of collection.
Keeping duct runs as short and straight as practical, and minimizing 90-degree elbows in favor of two 45-degree bends where a direction change is unavoidable, reduces the airflow loss that accumulates over a longer ducted run in a small shop.
Considerations
Floor space is worth measuring before buying. A compact single-stage collector with a single bag typically needs about 2 by 2 feet, and many models are designed to move on casters between tools in a small shop. A cyclone system with a separate collection bin generally needs closer to 3 by 3 feet, plus clearance above for the cyclone cone and filter stack — a real constraint in a single-car garage shop where floor space is already shared with a vehicle.
Filter micron rating affects both air quality and how often the filter needs cleaning. A standard 30-micron bag catches visible chips but lets finer dust pass into shop air; a 1-micron canister filter captures far more fine dust but requires more frequent cleaning to maintain airflow as it loads up.
