What Is CFM — and Why It's the Spec That Actually Matters
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute — the volume of air a shop vac moves per second of operation. A higher CFM means more airflow through the hose and filter, which translates directly to pickup capacity: how fast debris gets pulled in and how well the unit handles longer hose runs or multiple attachments.
Most manufacturers list CFM prominently, but it's measured without any hose or filter attached — at the open inlet, with zero restriction. Real-world CFM through a 6-foot hose with a loaded filter is meaningfully lower. That's not a defect to avoid; it's a variable to understand when comparing models side by side.
How Much CFM Do You Actually Need?
The answer depends on your primary use case, not your shop size or tank capacity.

Running HP (also called rated HP) reflects sustained power draw during real use. Most home shop vacs operate at 25–40% of their advertised peak HP while vacuuming. A "6.5 Peak HP" unit likely runs at 1.6–2.5 HP continuously under real conditions.
Amps as a Proxy
If a unit lists amperage, that number is more representative of real-world draw. A 12-amp motor on a standard 120V circuit draws 1,440 watts. Divide by 746 to convert to HP: that's approximately 1.93 HP sustained — regardless of what the peak HP label says.
Water Lift — When CFM Isn't Enough
Water lift (measured in inches of water column) is the maximum suction pressure the motor can generate — how hard it pulls, not how much air it moves. It's measured by sealing the inlet and recording how high the motor draws water up a calibrated column.
Water lift determines performance under restriction: clogged filters, fine particle loads, long hose runs, or narrow tool attachments. A unit with strong CFM but low water lift will lose suction quickly once the filter starts loading with fine dust over a work session.

Shop Vac Filter Types by Application
The filter is the variable most people ignore — and the one that most directly affects air quality in your workshop. Using the wrong filter either clogs fast and kills suction, or allows fine particles to pass through and recirculate into the air.
Foam Sleeve Filters
Standard issue on most shop vacs. Catches large debris and some medium particles. Not rated for fine dust — MDF and sanding dust pass through freely. Use for coarse workshop debris, construction cleanup, or as a pre-filter layered over a cartridge filter to extend its life.
Cartridge Filters (Pleated)
Pleated paper or synthetic element with significantly more surface area than foam. Most are rated for particles in the 1–5 micron range. Better for fine sawdust and moderate dust loads. Replace when suction drops noticeably — washing extends service life but reduces filtration rating over time.

How to Choose the Right Filter
- Coarse debris (wood chips, leaves, nails): Foam sleeve is sufficient. A HEPA filter here creates unnecessary restriction with no benefit.
- Fine sawdust (general woodworking): Standard pleated cartridge plus a filter bag. Replace the bag when full rather than cleaning it.
- MDF, drywall, or plaster dust: HEPA cartridge only. This is a respiratory concern, not just a machine efficiency concern.
- Wet pickup: Remove all filters. Running any filter wet causes mold growth and can permanently damage the filter media.
- Switching from wet back to dry in the same session: Dry the tank completely and reinstall a dry filter. A damp filter clogs within minutes of picking up fine dry dust.
