How the calculator determines your CFM

The base CFM for your primary tool is multiplied by a load factor based on how many tools run simultaneously (1.0× for one tool, up to 1.75× for three or more). A workshop size modifier — 0 to 200 CFM added — accounts for ambient dust that settles in larger spaces and eventually needs to be cleared. The two numbers are added to produce the minimum recommended CFM.

Shop vac vs. dust collector — where the line is

A shop vac moves air through a narrow hose under high suction — ideal for picking up chips and debris from light cutting and sanding. A dust collector moves a much larger volume of air through wider ports (4"–6"), which is what fine-dust-generating tools like routers, planers, and table saws need for effective capture at the source. When this calculator recommends a dust collector, substituting a shop vac means a portion of the fine dust bypasses collection entirely.

What CFM do I need for a shop vac? +
For light tools like orbital sanders and drills, 100–150 CFM is sufficient. Circular saws and miter saws need 250–450 CFM. Router tables and table saws require 500–650 CFM. Use this calculator to get a specific number based on your exact tool and workshop size.
How many gallons does my shop vac need to be? +
For occasional use with light tools, 5–6 gallons is adequate. Regular use in a medium workshop calls for 9–12 gallons. If you run dust-heavy tools like a planer or router table, go with 14–16 gallons or step up to a dedicated dust collector — those tools generate chip volume that fills a smaller tank quickly.
Can a shop vac replace a dust collector? +
For tools requiring under 200 CFM, a quality shop vac handles the job well. For high-volume tools like planers, jointers, or router tables running continuously, a dedicated dust collector delivers the sustained airflow and filtration a shop vac cannot match. The port size difference (2.5" vs 4"–6") is the core limitation — a shop vac physically cannot move the volume of air those tools need.
What happens if my shop vac CFM is too low? +
Under-powered dust collection results in sawdust and fine particles escaping capture, settling on surfaces, and entering your lungs. The hose can also clog frequently if airflow is insufficient to carry chips through the system. Matching CFM to your tools protects both your health and your finish quality — fine dust from MDF, MDF, and hardwoods poses real respiratory risks with long-term exposure.
Should I get a HEPA filter for my shop vac? +
Yes, if you sand MDF, drywall, or any engineered wood. Standard shop vac filters allow ultra-fine particles to pass through and recirculate into the air. A HEPA filter (rated to capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns) is a worthwhile upgrade for any shop where fine dust is a regular byproduct.
