The Baseline Why 34–36 Inches Became the Standard
The 34–36 inch range became the default because it was optimized for average male height when most workbench standards were established. It still works well for adults in the 5'8"–5'11" range doing general hand tool work — but it's a starting point, not a fixed rule.
The real variable is your body. A 6'2" builder working at 34 inches will be hunched over within an hour. A 5'4" builder at the same height loses leverage on hand planes and chisels. Neither is a functional ergonomic setup.
A well-dialed workbench height reduces back strain, improves tool control, and keeps you working longer without fatigue. It's one of the highest-impact adjustments in a home workshop setup — and one of the least discussed.
The Elbow Rule How to Calculate Your Ideal Height
The elbow rule is the most reliable method for finding your personal workbench height:
- Stand straight in the shoes you typically wear in the shop
- Let your arms hang naturally at your sides
- Bend your elbows to a relaxed 90° angle
- Measure from the floor to the underside of your wrists
- Subtract 2–4 inches from that number
The result is your baseline for most hand tool work. For detail work, electronics, or precision assembly, add 2–4 inches above that baseline to bring the work closer to eye level and reduce neck strain.

If you move between project types — woodworking one session, assembly the next, occasional repairs or electronics — an adjustable height workbench gives you a meaningful ergonomic advantage on every task. The ability to shift 6–8 inches changes how you use tools, how long you stay sharp, and how your back feels after a full day in the shop.
