A pegboard system above a garage workbench puts frequently used tools within arm's reach and off the bench surface. A 4×2-foot panel covers a single-station bench; a furring-strip standoff gives hooks the roughly 1-inch clearance they need to seat properly. An assorted hook kit — single-prong, double-prong, and small bins — covers most hand tool categories without a specialty kit. The panel itself is a low-cost, low-effort addition; the layout and hook selection are what make it actually useful day to day.
Panel Sizing
A 4×2-foot panel is the standard starting point for a single workbench station — wide enough to hold daily-use tools without extending far past the bench on either side. Shops with a wider variety of tools in active rotation often move up to a full 4×4-foot panel, or run two 4×2 panels side by side to cover the full width of a 6-foot bench.
Before buying, measure the wall space above the bench and subtract room for any upper cabinets or shelving planned for the same wall — pegboard and wall cabinets compete for the same vertical real estate, and it's easier to plan both at once than retrofit one around the other later.
Mounting & Standoff Depth
Standard pegboard hooks need roughly 1 inch of clearance behind the panel to seat fully into the 1/4-inch holes. Mounting pegboard flush against drywall skips that clearance — most hooks won't seat correctly and will pop loose under load, usually at the worst possible moment mid-project.

Locate studs before marking strip positions — pegboard loaded with tools carries real weight, and drywall anchors alone aren't a reliable long-term mount. Hook Selection & Layout
An assorted hook kit covering single-prong hooks (screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches), double-prong hooks (hammers, larger hand tools), and small bins or cups (fasteners, drill bits, small hardware) handles most home shop tool categories without buying single-purpose hooks one at a time. Specialty holders — cordless drill cradles, long-handled tool clips — are worth adding once the basic layout is established, rather than committing to a full specialty kit before knowing what actually gets used.
A Practical Layout Order
- Eye level: the 4-6 tools reached for most often
- Below eye level: secondary hand tools, measuring/marking gear
- Bins/cups: fasteners and small hardware, positioned near where they're used
Tracing tool outlines on the panel behind each hook is a low-cost habit that pays off — it flags a missing tool at a glance and discourages items drifting to other storage over time.
Hardboard vs. Metal
Standard 1/8-inch tempered hardboard pegboard handles typical hand tools well and is the lighter, cheaper, and easier-to-cut option — the practical default for a first pegboard install in a climate-controlled or attached garage. It isn't rated for very heavy items; a full drill press or a dense clamp collection concentrates load on a single hook and can tear through hardboard over time.
Metal pegboard resists moisture and holds its shape better in unheated or humid garages, where hardboard can sag or swell with seasonal humidity swings. For heavier loads generally, 1/4-inch pegboard or a slat-wall panel system distributes weight across a full horizontal rail instead of concentrating it at a single hook point — worth considering for a shop that leans toward power tool storage rather than hand tools.
